Jan Yates Treasures from Books Oct. 28, 2013
Jan Yates shares Treasures from the Printed Word
“Stories are the basic element of all human communication.”
For this program, Jan has chosen four resources:
- a rare book by James Joyce, written for his grandson 75 years ago
- a book of short stories by Frank Sheldon, which had been discarded from the library
- a magazine article and personal interview
- Haunted Heartland, a book of purportedly true stories from the Midwest
The James Joyce story is about the mayor of a tiny French town, who plays a trick on the devil (who speaks very bad French – with an Irish accent!)
She will also tell a Frank Stockton story about a king who banishes himself to find out why everything is going wrong in his kingdom…
And a story about an old haunted Victorian house in Port Townsend, that has two Ladies of the house.
Jan will also present this program at Park View Villa on Wed. Oct. 30th at 2:00pm.
Jan began her joy of storytelling almost 25 years ago in Sacramento, CA. She was active in the Sacramento Storytelling Guild and also enjoyed some professional programming in the area. After moving to Port Angeles in 1998, she was distracted temporarily by the lure of the local theater. She had majored in theater at the University and now had opportunity to practice some of those skills. She acted in some productions and also wrote a special Reader’s Theater program, telling the little known story of the Loyalists in the American Revolution.
